ASALH Award Recognition! The Result of Speaking after Receiving a Scholarship as a first-generation student!
Time to testify: 20 years ago at the age of 16, I was kicked out of the house on Christmas Eve after work that night at Publix. I became a statistic: homeless youth. Teachers concluded that I would drop out of high school, 16 and pregnant. Then, I lost 4 family members in a month including my brother. All hope was lost. 2 years later, i obtained a full-time to college from 18 scholarships, including a full ride from Bill Gates via the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. I went from a homeless shelter into a college dorm overnight and majored in math at the University of Florida. Now, I've shared this story, and as a result, over $250 million has been raised for scholarships that helped at-risk youth. I never knew the power of sharing my story.
Fast-forward, the statistic has been BROKEN! I am now raising my two beautiful children in a way that shows that hope is possible for the future in spite of how messed up your situation may appear to be.
I'm thankful for every organization that took a chance in investing in me, but it really only took one person to cultivate a desire to succeed. By the grace of God, I had one person and am forever thankful for it. I'm thankful for the award I just received from ASALH, and I pray that I can continue to triumph through all stages of life ! From homelessness to Dr. India White; may the Lord be magnified! Thank you, to each of you, who believed in me and gave me an opportunity to succeed! Happy holidays!🥰
