I'm So EXCITED!! My Grit Article made the FCTM Dimensions Journa!!
Grateful for the FCTM Dimensions Feature!

๐ฒ Why G.R.I.T. Matters: Featured in the FCTM Dimensions Journal! ๐โจ
I am honored and excited to share that my latest article has been featured in the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) Dimensions Journal! ๐๐
As educators, we continue to search for effective ways to help students achieve academic success while also developing the perseverance needed to overcome challenges. My article focuses on a topic that has become the foundation of my life's work:
๐ช Why G.R.I.T. Is Needed in Today's Classrooms
While academic content is important, many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they lack the confidence, resilience, and persistence needed to navigate challenges.
Students today face increasing academic pressures, social challenges, and emotional obstacles. When learning becomes difficult, many students quickly become discouraged and give up before reaching success.
This is why educators must intentionally teach and nurture G.R.I.T.
At G.R.I.T. Academy, G.R.I.T. stands for:
๐ฑ Growth Mindset – Believing abilities can be developed through effort and learning.
๐ช Resilience – Bouncing back from setbacks and viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn.
๐ Self-Efficacy – Developing confidence in one's ability to succeed.
โฐ Time Management – Learning how to prioritize tasks and manage responsibilities effectively.
These four pillars help students build the habits and mindset necessary for long-term success both inside and outside the classroom.
๐ฎ Learning Through Play: The G.R.I.T. Board Games
One of the exciting tools highlighted in my article is the G.R.I.T. Board Game Series.
Research continues to show that students learn best when they are actively engaged. Educational games provide opportunities for students to collaborate, communicate, problem-solve, and persist through challenges in a low-risk environment.
The G.R.I.T. Games were designed to help students:
๐ฏ Build perseverance
๐ฏ Strengthen critical thinking
๐ฏ Develop positive academic identities
๐ฏ Practice teamwork and communication
๐ฏ Learn mathematical concepts through engaging activities
๐ฏ Strengthen problem-solving skills while having fun
The games create opportunities for productive struggle, allowing students to experience challenges while developing the confidence to keep moving forward.
When students learn to persist during a game, they are more likely to persist when solving challenging math problems and navigating real-world situations.
๐ Measuring What Matters: The G.R.I.T. Assessment
Another important component discussed in the article is the G.R.I.T. Assessment.
As educators, we often measure academic achievement, but how often do we measure the mindset and behaviors that contribute to achievement?
The G.R.I.T. Assessment provides valuable insights into students' strengths and growth areas related to:
โ Growth Mindset
โ Resilience
โ Self-Efficacy
โ Time Management
By understanding where students are in their G.R.I.T. journey, educators can provide targeted support and interventions that help students become more successful learners.
The assessment also empowers students to reflect on their own habits, mindset, and personal growth, creating greater ownership of their learning.
๐ Building Future-Ready Learners
Preparing students for success requires more than teaching standards and content. We must also equip them with the skills and dispositions necessary to persevere through challenges and achieve their goals.
When students develop G.R.I.T., they learn to:
โ๏ธ Embrace challenges
โ๏ธ Learn from mistakes
โ๏ธ Believe in their abilities
โ๏ธ Manage their time effectively
โ๏ธ Persist through adversity
โ๏ธ Achieve at higher levels academically
Most importantly, they learn that success is not about being perfect—it's about continuing to move forward when things get difficult.
๐ค Join the G.R.I.T. Movement
I am grateful to FCTM for providing a platform to share this important work with mathematics educators across Florida and beyond.
Together, we can create classrooms where students not only learn mathematics but also develop the confidence, resilience, and perseverance needed to thrive in school and life.
I invite educators, school leaders, and districts to explore how the G.R.I.T. Framework, G.R.I.T. Games, and G.R.I.T. Assessment can support student achievement and transform classroom culture.
Because when students build G.R.I.T., they build the foundation for lifelong success. ๐
