Get Gritty About YOUR Business: “You gotta be Grittier”

By: Dr. India White

Grit is defined by Dr. Angela Duckworth as, “passion and perseverance for long-term goals”. With grit, persistence is key. Grit is the fuel you need to stay motivated and to make it happen. However, grit does not just evolve in a day. Grit is an ongoing process of routines, procedures, expectations, and mindsets that refuse to settle, and to never quit. Without grit, discouragement can set in, and dreams can perish.

Here are some tips to help you remain gritty about your business:

1.    Be willing to be Inconvenienced

a.    Sometimes, business will require you to sacrifice precious hours of the night to serve a customer’s needs. Further, you might have to be inconvenienced with phone calls, zoom meetings and more. This means that your schedule can have various hiccups that you will have to take care of, but this is a part of the growing pains of any business. Further, Michael Barnett of Marketing Week speaks about “strategic inconvenience”, and how business owners can embrace this concept for profitable marketing strategies to help their business.

2.   Do not Compromise on Your Goals

a.   Sometimes, as you find that your business begins to pick-up, you’ll find that it will be tempting to compromise on your goals. This happens when you want to cancel meetings, or even settle for less than what you aspired to accomplish. Choose to remain focused and committed to your dreams and current goals. If needed, find accountability partners who can help you stick it out. Further, allow the grit within to help you remain focused and disciplined so you won’t fail in reaching your destiny.

3.   Embrace a Growth Mindset

a.    In order to grow as a business owner, you must consider the benefits of embracing a growth mindset. Sometimes, you’ll be tempted to keep things the way they were, however, with a growth mindset and grit, you can expand your business in efforts to serve more customers. Forbes magazine, Dr. Pragya Agarwal mentions how having a growth mindset means that you do not accept failure or setback as final. When you grow weary from business transactions and disappointment, grit will give you the strength to muster up enough faith to believe that you can press on beyond disappointment and profit more than every before. Use your grit, to fuel your growth mindset and cultivate success!

4.   Keep Your Deadlines

a.    In order to not set yourself back and work backwards, you must learn to keep your deadlines. All business owners have goals, but you really have to learn how to stay on task and meet deadlines, so you do not fall behind and possibly miss out on opportunities. When you keep your deadlines, you are choosing to feed your dreams with positivity and will ultimately see the results with time.

5.   Refuse to Settle for Less

a.   In order to excel in your business, you must refuse to settle for less. You have a purpose to achieve. When you settle, you are saying that you don’t want your goals as much as you say you do. In order to prove that you do want your goals, you must choose to strive for the best in all that you do and refuse to settle for less. Never settle for good when you can have great. In order to enjoy “great” success in business, you must allow your grittiness to propel you into the dimension of greatness so you can succeed and profit like never before.

6.   Make it Happen, No Matter What!

a.   No matter the strategies used, time management skills, accountability and goal setting you have to establish in order to achieve your goal, do whatever it takes to make it happen! Some goals are simply windows of opportunity, and you don’t get a second chance at them. Hence, do all that you can to succeed while you have the mental stamina and strength to do so.

Conclusion

To conclude, getting gritty will take much determination and organization for you to see the overall success of your dreams coming to pass. As you are willing to be inconvenienced, choose not to compromise on your goals, embrace a growth mindset, keep your deadlines, refuse to happen and remain convinced to make it happen no matter what, your grittiness will pay off and your dreams will become your reality! Keep your grit: Great Resilience in Time, and watch your life become more than you every expected. I wish every business leader the most success as they remain gritty about their business!

Let’s Get Gritty: 5 G.R.I.T.-Powered Tips for Starting Off the School Year Right The start of the school year is a powerful moment; a fresh opportunity to set the tone, establish relationships, and lay the foundation for student success. This year, I encourage you to launch your classroom with G.R.I.T.: focusing on Growth mindset, Resilience, Self-Efficacy, and Time Management. These four pillars don’t just help students succeed academically—they help you, the educator, lead with clarity, purpose, and confidence. Here are 5 actionable, GRIT-filled tips to kick off your school year strong: 1. Get to Know Your Students Every student comes with a unique story. Taking time to understand their learning styles, goals, and experiences shows them that they matter. This is where growth mindset comes alive—when we believe every student can improve and grow, no matter their starting point. GRIT Tip: Use icebreakers, interest surveys, or one-on-one chats to learn more about each student. Personal connections inspire engagement and persistence. 2. Speak to EVERY Parent or Guardian Strong home-school partnerships build trust and set the tone for collaboration. When parents feel seen and heard, they’re more likely to support and partner with you throughout the year. GRIT Tip: Make it a goal to connect with every family in the first two weeks with a positive phone call, email, or message. This builds your own self-efficacy and shows families that you’re invested in their child. 3. Connect with the Community Students are more resilient when they see how their learning connects to the real world. Whether it’s inviting local leaders to speak or organizing service projects, community connections bring relevance and depth to your teaching. GRIT Tip: Tap into the power of local culture and voices. When students see their community represented in learning, they build pride and purpose. 4. Know the Data Data isn’t just numbers; it’s a guide to help you make intentional decisions. Understanding your students’ strengths, gaps, and growth areas early on helps you manage time wisely and set personalized goals. GRIT Tip: Set aside weekly time to review data and make small, consistent adjustments. Empower students to track their own progress and celebrate wins, big or small. 5. Establish Norms for Success Your classroom culture will shape how students respond to challenges. Create norms that emphasize perseverance, responsibility, and mutual respect. Make these norms student-led and revisit them often. GRIT Tip: Let students help define what success looks like in your space. When expectations are clear and co-created, students feel ownership—and that builds resilience and self-efficacy. Final Thought: This school year, let’s lead with GRIT. Let’s build classrooms where students feel empowered to grow, bounce back, and believe in themselves. When we model G.R.I.T. as educators, we equip students with the tools they need to thrive in every area of life. Ready to bring G.R.I.T. to your school or district? I offer professional development, GRIT trainings for staff and students, keynote sessions, and engaging workshops to help you start strong and stay strong throughout the year.
